The carpet last year was flooded and was pulled up and exposed shattered asbestos tiles which produced powdered asbestos dust. The women's shoes are held in this area. According to the Health Department there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres. Once airborne, small fibres may remain suspended in the air for some time and can be carried long distances by wind before settling down. Friable asbestos products are generally quite soft and loose and can be crumbled into fine material or dust with very light pressure, such as crushing with your hand. Such products usually contain high levels of asbestos (up to 100% in some instances), which is loosely held in the product so that the asbestos fibres are easily released into the air. Asbestos materials will become friable when they are sufficiently damaged, badly weathered or otherwise deteriorated Only a small spore inhaled or transferred to the body can result in ill health and/or death. This can take months or years to manifest symptoms.
