::Once you figure out the Opal system, public transportation in the city is great, but as a visitor I found the train system deficient compared to other places I've visited. When I arrived at the station yesterday morning to buy a single use ticket I got in line with my wife and said, "This seems like a bad system. There's only one machine, what happens if it breaks?" Sure enough the machine was apparently out of single trip tickets. There was an Australian gentleman behind us who wasn't from Sydney and also needed a single trip ticket. We all wandered around the station looking like fools. There were no transit system employees to be found, the other machines were only capable of "topping up" pre-purchased Opal cards, and there were no signs suggesting where one might find an Opal card for sale. We ended up scrapping our day's plans and called for an Uber into the CBD instead. If you're visiting the city, do yourself a favor and purchase an Opal card from 7-11 or wherever you can find one immediately. Using Google maps and picking the public transport option worked great for us once we got our Opal cards. Buses are clean and run frequently. The Opal card even works on the ferries. But plan your route and know where the train stations are, because unlike other cities there aren't signs to point the way from a distance.
